Find Relief Through Stress Management & Burnout Counselling

Stress has a way of building beneath the surface, slowly affecting your energy, your clarity, and your ability to feel like yourself.

What starts as pressure, responsibility or high expectations can slowly turn into emotional exhaustion, mental fatigue and a sense that you’re just getting through the day. Or, as one of our clients recently described, “finding yourself curled up on the floor, drowning in an emotional puddle you can’t seem to roll out of.”

At One Life Counselling, we understand how challenging and debilitating it can feel when everything feels like too much. We offer stress management counselling and burnout therapy in Calgary to help you step out of survival mode and begin to feel like yourself again.

What Is Stress Management Counselling?

Stress management counselling is a form of therapy that helps you to move back within your window of tolerance – the range in which you feel you can effectively navigate your emotions and stress.

Stress is normal in our modern way of living. Becoming a parent, ongoing conflict, feeling unsupported in relationships or work environments, and health changes are a few of many everyday life experiences that can push us outside our window of tolerance and beyond our capacity to manage the demands of life. When this happens, stress management therapy can help you to:

  • Be gentler with yourself during difficult periods
  • Respond without becoming overwhelmed
  • Understand your limits without guilt
  • Stay connected to yourself under pressure
  • Prevent stress from turning into burnout

When stress becomes chronic, it often overlaps with anxiety, low mood, and physical symptoms, making it harder to recover without support.

Signs You May Be Dealing With Chronic Stress Or Burnout

woman looking distressed One Life Counselling Calgary

One client of ours identified that she needed burnout counselling after an evening of working late when her husband asked her to join him for a walk. As they were getting ready, he mentioned the destination he had in mind, and she broke down in uncontrollable tears. In her mind, she had been expecting a different destination, and the disappointment or sudden change in plan felt emotionally overwhelming.

You might notice:

  • Feeling constantly overwhelmed, even with small tasks
  • Irritability, frustration, or emotional exhaustion
  • Trouble sleeping, focusing, or making decisions
  • Feeling detached, numb, or unmotivated
  • Physical symptoms like headaches, tension, or fatigue
  • Loss of interest in things that used to matter

If this has been your experience, you are not alone. It is very common for people to hit a wall, and recovery is something your body/mind system will need.

Something to note is that many of these symptoms can also be present when going through peri-menopause and menopause. It may be helpful to consult with your doctor in addition to exploring stress management therapy.

How Counselling Can Help With Stress And Burnout

Burnout counselling focuses on both immediate relief and long-term change. It begins with helping you stabilize your nervous system, especially when you feel overwhelmed, shut down, or constantly on edge. As your system begins to settle, there is more capacity to reflect, understand what’s been happening, and begin making meaningful changes. From there, therapy can help you to understand what your body needs to fully recover, make sense of past experiences and patterns, and begin setting healthier internal boundaries.

The symptoms of stress and burnout can feel so intense and destabilizing that many of our clients come to counselling not only wanting to feel better, but wanting to prevent ever reaching this point again.

One client shared that she felt like she was doing everything she was “supposed” to do to manage stress: Going to yoga, exercising, and making time to meditate. But she realized she was responding to work emails right up until her yoga class began and spending most of her self-care time mentally consumed by work. She was going through the motions of taking care of herself, but her nervous system never truly had the opportunity to rest. One of her first steps in therapy was learning to pause and check in with what her body actually needed in the moment. For a period of time, that was often something much simpler: A nap, quiet, or sitting silently with a cup of tea.

Stabilizing & Regulating The Nervous System

When stress or burnout is high, it can be hard to think clearly or reflect on how you got here, and you may even feel distressed by how unstable things feel. This step focuses on creating enough safety and steadiness in the body and mind so that deeper work becomes possible.

Identifying Stress Triggers

We look at what’s actually driving your stress, workload, expectations, relationships, or internal pressure and begin to make sense of the pattern.

Building Coping Strategies

You’ll learn practical tools to manage stress in real time, including grounding, emotional regulation, and sustainable coping strategies that fit your life.

Setting Boundaries & Preventing Burnout

Many of our clients experiencing burnout struggle with saying no, overextending, or carrying too much responsibility. Over time, therapy helps you redefine limits in a way that feels possible and aligned.

Restoring Balance & Resilience

Over time, the goal is to help you feel steadier, clearer, and able to respond to life without constantly feeling depleted. A measure our therapists monitor against is how much you feel like yourself. It can take time to fully restore balance, but it is often noticeable in the body when it returns.

Why Choose One Life Counselling?

We focus on practical, meaningful change that helps you better understand yourself and build the insight and skills to navigate different situations with more clarity, confidence, and energy.

Clients often choose us because:

  • We offer evidence-based therapy grounded in real-life application
  • Our therapists are registered professionals
  • We provide both in-person and online counselling in Calgary
  • We take time to match you with the right therapist
  • Our approach is human, practical, and collaborative

We also take burnout seriously. One of our clinic owners has personally experienced burnout in a previous career and had to take medical leave as a result. Because of this, we are intentional about supporting our own therapists’ well-being and preventing burnout within our team as well, so they can show up steady, present, and resourceful in their work with you. It also means we have a deep, personal understanding of what burnout can feel like – not just as a concept, but in lived experience – and a genuine commitment to helping you move through it in a way that feels sustainable and supportive.

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees… is by no means a waste of time.” We believe  true recovery begins when you allow yourself the space to slow down, reset your energy, and rebuild sustainable habits. – John Lubbock

Who Can Benefit From Burnout Counselling?

Burnout therapy in Calgary can support a wide range of people, especially:

Working Professionals

High responsibility, long hours, and constant pressure can lead to work-related stress and burnout that’s hard to step away from.

Caregivers & Parents

Balancing others’ needs while neglecting your own can create deep emotional exhaustion over time.

Students & High Achievers

Perfectionism, performance pressure, and internal expectations often lead to chronic stress and anxiety.

If you feel like you’re always “on,” always thinking, or constantly pushing through without knowing how to take time for yourself to rest and recharge, this counselling can help.

What To Expect From Stress Management And Burnout Counselling

Therapy is not about being told to “relax more” or “take better care of yourself.” We’ve all received this advice, usually with the best of intentions, from a family member, partner, friend, or even coworker. When you’re already overwhelmed, that kind of advice can feel unhelpful or even frustrating. What you need most is understanding and support, and not another thing to try to figure out how to do.

Counselling is a space where:

  • You can slow down and feel heard
  • Your experience is understood without judgment
  • Patterns begin to make sense
  • You gain clarity on what needs to change
  • You leave with both insight and practical tools

Over time, you can expect to feel less reactive, more grounded, and more in control of your energy and decisions. Wouldn’t that feel glorious?

Frequently Asked Questions About Stress Management And Burnout Counselling

What is the difference between stress and burnout?

Stress is often short-term and linked to specific pressures or demands. Burnout is the result of prolonged, unmanaged stress, leading to emotional exhaustion, detachment, and reduced capacity.

A counsellor on our team describes stress as feeling like you’re still above water but struggling to stay afloat. You can manage but just barely, and need support or tools (like “water wings,” a flotation device, or learning how to reach the edge of the pool) to regain stability. Burnout, on the other hand, is more like already being under the water. You are stuck at the bottom of the pool, feeling disconnected, unable to think clearly or “get back to the surface,” and finding it hard (if not impossible) to function in day-to-day life, such as going to work, caring for dependents, or keeping up with basic responsibilities.

Yes. Burnout therapy helps you understand the patterns (both yours and others’) contributing to work stress, build coping strategies, and create boundaries that make your workload more sustainable.

Our team has experience in supporting clients through work-related stress leaves.

If stress is affecting your sleep, mood, relationships, or ability to function day-to-day, counselling can help you understand what’s happening and support meaningful change.

During periods of high stress or burnout, our thinking often becomes more narrow, and it can be harder to see options or next steps, including reaching out for support. We often receive phone calls or emails from people contacting us on behalf of someone they care about, because the process can feel overwhelming for that person to manage on their own.

Whether you reach out yourself or someone in your life reaches out for you, we are here to help support that next step for your mental health.
