Individual Counselling FAQ

How can individual counselling help me with my specific concerns or issues?
At One Life, our team of professional therapists is trained and experienced in the latest proven psychological strategies and techniques. No matter your concerns or issues, individual counselling can provide you with a safe and productive setting to help you move forward in life in the ways you most want. We focus on the goals that you bring in and help you progress towards those goals in your therapy.
How often will I need to attend individual counselling sessions?
You and your therapist will decide together how often to see each other. Often, sessions will take place approximately once a week as you get to know each other. After that, you may decide that more or less frequent appointments are appropriate. The reason for the frequency is to develop relationship with your therapist and to gain momentum and progress.
How long does individual counselling typically last?
That really depends on you. Building a trusting rapport with your therapist typically takes a few sessions. After that, some people choose to see their therapist regularly for many years, while others conclude therapy after a few months. You can always return to counselling after a short or long break. The biggest factor is VALUE. You want to make sure that you are getting value from your therapy sessions and that you feel like you are on a journey of self discovery, self improvement, healing, and becoming the best version of yourself.
What can I expect during my first individual counselling session?
Your first individual counselling session is all about you and your therapist getting to know each other and beginning to build a relationship. Some therapists will guide a conversation with specific questions, while others will allow you to take the lead.

Finding the right therapist is foundational to making progress, but it’s also important to understand what you bring to the equation. Before you come to therapy, take time to reflect on your goals and what aspects of yourself you want to work on. What are the changes you want to see? Bringing a strong sense of intention to your individual counselling is paramount.
How do I know if individual counselling is right for me?
Are you ready to change? Are you ready to heal or develop new beliefs about yourself? If your answer is yes, then counselling might be the right approach for you. Most people seek therapy for one of three reasons: To reduce symptoms, to improve relationships, or to deal with life decisions or experiences. At One Life, we believe that individual counselling can be right for anyone. There is great value in investing in your own personal mastery, growth, and healing journey.
Are individual counselling sessions confidential?
Yes. Therapists are professionally and ethically bound to maintain the confidentiality of their clients. Exceptions include the disclosure of a child in danger or the intent to harm oneself or another person.
Will my insurance cover individual counselling?
Most health insurance plans will cover professional counselling services with one of our Calgary psychologists, and many of our therapists’ services are covered by major insurance plans. Please inform us at the time of booking your appointment if insurance coverage is preferred. We have coaches on our team who might not be covered by your plan, so it’s always good to check first if you plan on using insurance to see a therapist or coach.
How do I find a qualified individual counsellor?
All of our counsellors at One Life are highly qualified for depression and anxiety counselling. Each of our psychologists have couples therapy training and many have a background in trauma counselling. If you’re interested in specific services (such as couples counselling, grief counselling, or EMDR therapy), please reach out to us or indicate this when you book your appointment.
How should I prepare for my counselling session?
Be prepared to talk about your situation. Here is the thing: Growth is painful and for the majority of people that growth is 110% worth it. Everyone starts off having certain goals for themselves. For example, many people want to improve certain symptoms, feelings and thoughts about themselves. Others want to heal parts of their past and/or overcome sabotaging behaviors or limiting beliefs. Before each session you can take some time to reflect and ask yourself what feels the most relevant/important for you to focus on right now? Goals are important for self growth and provide a starting point for conversation.
