RLT Couples Therapy

Relational Life Therapy (RLT) operates on the profound understanding that a relationship is not merely the sum of its parts but a living entity that’s constantly evolving and adapting. Imagine peeling back the layers to reveal the stories and negative patterns that shape each partner's moves. Creator of the RLT approach, Terry Real, invites couples to sit in the studio of their relationship, casting a compassionate light on the narratives that have shaped their dance.

If you and your partner are ready to embark on a transformative journey together, working with a Calgary psychologist trained in RLT may be the right fit. Contact us at One Life Counselling & Coaching Ltd. to learn more.

Core Skills and Teachings of RLT Couples Therapy

The magic of RLT unfolds as partners embark on a joint journey of exploration, fostering a climate of emotional security and openness where partners can articulate their needs, dreams, and fears.

RLT propels couples into an arena of transformation, where they confront patterns and scripts that have been etched into their dance for years. It's a courageous act of revealing the underbelly of the dance—exposing where partners have been stepping on each other's toes and tugging at each other's vulnerabilities.

RLT doesn't just offer a diagnosis—it prescribes tools. Our RLT trained therapists equip Calgary couples with the skills to re-choreograph their dance and rediscover the art of attunement and responsiveness. Partners learn the language of connection, woven with threads of empathy and validation. They move beyond the stale routines to embrace the rhythm of passion and curiosity once again.

RLT shines a light on the power dynamics that often underscore the dance—inviting partners to shift from adversaries to allies. This approach empowers partners to renegotiate their roles, allowing for growth and renewal in the partnership.

The core skills and teachings of Relational Life Therapy work include:

Radical Responsibility

RLT encourages partners to embrace a stance of radical ownership, acknowledging that each holds a brush that contributes to the portrait of their connection. By stepping away from blame and into a creative role, partners resolve conflicts together and actively shape the narrative of their love story.

The Art of Attunement

RLT couples counselling teaches couples to attune to each other's emotional frequencies. Partners learn to listen deeply, not just to words, but to the underlying emotions and unspoken desires. This requires empathy, curiosity, and presence.

Differentiation and Connection

At the heart of differentiation and connection in RLT is the delicate balance between unity and autonomy. Partners learn to embrace their individuality and give each other space to breathe while fostering a sense of togetherness and creating space to draw closer together.

Vulnerability As Strength

RLT encourages partners to let down their guards, revealing their true selves without fear of judgment. Vulnerability becomes a currency of connection, a way to bridge the gap between hearts and create a shared sanctuary of authenticity.

Emotional Regulation and Communication

RLT equips partners with tools to navigate the emotional storms that inevitably arise. Partners learn how to communicate with respect and empathy, transforming disputes into opportunities for growth.

Narrative Reframing

RLT couples counselling encourages partners to shift their perspectives and reframe their narratives to achieve intimacy. Old stories can be rewritten, wounds can be healed, and grievances can be transformed into avenues of understanding.

Negotiating Desire and Intimacy

Just as a skilled dancer finds harmony in their movements, RLT couples therapy teaches couples to find harmony in their desires and intimacies. Partners explore their erotic maps, learning to navigate the terrain of passion and connection and creating a space where both partners feel seen, desired, and celebrated.

Self-Compassion and Growth

RLT couples counselling reminds partners that the journey to a fulfilling relationship begins with nurturing their individual selves. It's about cultivating self-compassion, acknowledging one's imperfections, and embracing growth as a lifelong endeavour.

Ultimately, RLT couples counselling is a journey of rediscovery. Partners learn to see each other anew, embracing the mystery of the dance with fresh eyes and an open heart. Guided by a Relational Life therapist, couples chart a course toward connection, intimacy, and a dance that leaves both partners breathless, captivated, and more alive than ever before.
