How Does Narrative Therapy Work?

Life is a collection of stories, and within these stories lie our interpretations of events, emotions, and relationships. Sometimes, we get stuck in repetitive, negative scripts—the stories that hold us back or keep us feeling trapped or disconnected. Narrative therapy invites us to unravel these scripts, question their validity, and create alternative stories that reflect our resilience, growth, and aspirations.

Narrative Therapy doesn't place the therapist in a position of authority, dispensing solutions. Instead, it's a collaborative dance, a joint exploration between the therapist and the client. Together, they work to deconstruct the dominant narratives that might be causing pain or distress. This process externalizes problems, separates them from the client as well as social and cultural contexts, and creates space for curiosity and fresh perspectives.

By gently untangling the threads of stories like, "I'm a failure", "I'm unlovable", or "I'm stuck in this situation", Narrative Therapy seeks to delve into their origins and how they've been woven into our lives.  The magic comes when we begin to co-author new narratives, ones that highlight strengths, moments of triumph, and the possibilities for change.

Narrative Therapy techniques involve several steps:

Step 1: Externalize the Problem

Imagine standing outside the walls of your challenge, looking in. We’ll begin by giving a name or a shape to the issue—"The Inner Critic", "The Imposter Monster". By externalizing the problem, we separate it from your core identity, creating space for inquiry and understanding.

Step 2: Deconstruct Dominant Narratives

Those old, familiar stories that whisper doubt and limitation? Let's unravel them. We dissect dominant narratives, examining their roots and impacts on your thoughts and actions. What hidden assumptions have you been carrying? How has your dominant story held you back or limited your potential?

Step 3: Cultivate Alternative Narratives

Narrative therapists support clients in crafting stories and narrative ideas that resonate with their strengths, values, and dreams. We’ll explore moments when you defied those old narratives—the times you were brave, resourceful, and resilient. These alternative narratives become the foundation for your new awareness and narrative practice.

Step 4: Reclaim Agency and Choice

Narrative Therapy recognizes that you’re not merely a character in your stories—you're the author. You hold the power to choose how you interpret events, how you respond, and how you define yourself. This realization empowers you to rewrite the script of your life in alignment with your aspirations.

Step 5: Embrace Curiosity and Experimentation

Like an explorer charting uncharted territories, step into the unexplored realm of your alternative narratives. We’ll experiment with new thoughts, behaviours, and perspectives. What if you approached challenges from a different angle? What if you responded with kindness instead of criticism? Through experimentation, we nurture new skills.

Step 6: Reflect and Integrate

As you venture along the Narrative Therapy path, take time to reflect on your journey. Journal your insights, celebrate your victories—no matter how small—and acknowledge moments of growth. Integrate these new narratives and skills into your daily life, weaving them seamlessly into your identity.

Step 7: Engage in Ongoing Dialogue

Just as stories evolve, so do we. Engage in ongoing conversations with yourself, your trusted confidants, and your Narrative Therapist. Share your progress, your challenges, and your evolving narratives. Such dialogue nurtures continued growth and deepening self-awareness.

If being able to use your insurance benefits is an important factor in your selection, our team would be happy to recommend one of our therapists who's services are covered by most insurance plans. Please be sure to confirm in advance if insurance coverage is preferred.

Our standard fees are aligned with the recommended fee schedule from the Psychologist’s Association of Alberta. However, we offer the added value of 60-minute sessions in contrast to the recommended 50-minute session for this fee.
