How Therapy Can Help Your Child

If you're considering counselling services for your child, chances are that your child has recently experienced a major life event or trauma and/or is exhibiting one or more behaviours or symptoms that you feel are concerning (or at the very least, perplexing). These might include:

  • Behavioural changes
  • Inability to express or identify emotions
  • Disconnection between parent/child
  • Emotional dysregulation
  • Mood swings
  • Unexplained physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, or exhaustion
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or having frequent nightmares
  • Social difficulties
  • Anxiety
  • Self-harming behaviours

At its core, the aim of child therapy is to identify the underlying causes for such behaviours or symptoms and then to work with the child (and parents/family, if appropriate) to understand and resolve them within a trusting, supportive, and solution-oriented environment. Depending on the age and capabilities of the child, our child psychologists will integrate a variety of proven and developmentally appropriate psychological approaches that may include Parent and Child Synergetic Play Therapy, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, and more. Children will be supported in expressing themselves in healthy ways, learning to problem solve, understanding their own feelings and needs, and building resilience. We see the process as an active team effort between our child psychologist, child and parent. This active collaboration and team work sets you up for success at home. If you are looking for behavioral change, we can set you up with a positive solutions focused plan to enhance your child's response with you. Ultimately, our goal at One Life is to empower children and families to move forward in life with increased awareness, self-confidence, and a toolkit filled with concrete and helpful strategies.

What You Can Expect During a Therapy Session

When you bring your child to counselling sessions at One Life, you can trust that they’ll be welcomed with warmth and made to feel safe and comfortable. Child therapy approaches vary somewhat from those used with adults and may include art, play, and attachment based therapy. For older children and adolescents, practical strategies are often foregrounded along with behaviour management approaches.
At One Life, we view children within the context of their family unit and are committed to working in collaboration with parents and guardians. Parent or family counselling is also available and is often a recommended element of treatment plans for children of all ages.

Children Counselling
We want you to feel empowered and a part of this process. Please ask us questions:
  • What approach do you take with counselling parents and children?
  • What does the end result look like?
  • How long will it take?
  • How am I involved as a parent or guardian in this process?
  • What should I expect out of you as our psychologist?

Types of Counselling Options for Children

The type of counselling your child receives at One Life will depend on their age (6 years plus), personality, and the reasons you’re seeking psychological services for them. Our registered child psychologists may combine multiple therapeutic approaches that can include Synergetic Play Therapy and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy. Solution-focused therapies focus on the future, while parent-directed interaction approaches foreground behaviour management.

No matter what techniques your child’s psychologist feels is the best fit, you can rest assured that they will take time to educate you about what to expect throughout the counselling process. As the journey unfolds, ongoing communication between parents and the counsellor is a key aspect of proactive support for your child.

For more information about specific child counselling services, it’s best to contact our office directly so that we can connect you with the right psychologist for your child’s needs.

Why Would a Child Need Counselling?

The reasons why parents seek psychological services for their children are vast and varied, but most often, it's because something doesn't feel right, and they want to support their child, help them realize their potential, and become their best self. Seeking psychological support for your child is a sign of love, and at One Life, we witness first-hand the true power and impact of effective child psychology practices every single day. Sometimes when parents seek psychological services for a child, it's because the child is facing a challenging situation such as :
  • Power struggles
  • Abuse (including sexual abuse)
  • Adoption
  • Behavioral challenges
  • Bullying or peer pressure
  • A divorce
  • Gender identity issues
  • An illness
  • The death of a loved one
  • Witness to a trauma event, i.e domestic abuse
  • Technology or social media addiction
  • Sibling rivalry or other challenging family dynamics
  • Other traumas
A child may also be exhibiting concerning or unexplained behavioural issues or developmental setbacks. In such cases, parents are often seeking answers or diagnoses to gain more understanding and provide better support. Causes might involve:

Neurodivergence

This term describes people whose brains work differently from neurotypical brains; it can be associated with a wide variety of strengths and challenges. Being neurodivergent is neither a medical diagnosis nor a disability. It’s often associated with individuals who have Autism Spectrum Disorder or sensory processing challenges.

Learning disabilities

Learning disabilities can be another aspect of neurodivergence. They refer to a wide range of conditions and disorders that may impact a child’s ability to communicate, process information, coordinate movement, or maintain focus. ADHD is one of the most common learning disabilities child psychologists help to address.

Psychological disorders

Anxiety and behavioural disorders are both common in children and can be effectively addressed with supportive counselling. Other psychological disorders may involve a more in-depth diagnostic process.
